Used Toyota Camry Engines

Toyota Camrys “run forever.” In fact, we’ve sold Camry engines to more than one customer who has gotten more than 400,000 miles out of their original engine. Note that these results are not typical; folks getting those kind of miles are maintenance freaks, and I say “freak” with every intention of it being a compliment. You can maintain till you’re blue in the face unless the design is good. Camry’s have excellent design. The cars just last! If you find yourself in a situation where you need an engine for your Camry, you would probably do well to replace the engine if the rest of the vehicle is in good shape.

We recently had one of our installers in Middle Tennessee put an engine in a really sweet lady’s1999 Camry. She was from Northern Missisippi; our guy picked up her car and hauled it to his shop. I say “our guy” because he is a shop that we have a fantastic relationship with, but he isn’t employed by us. We were able to drive the Camry, motor knocking like crazy, onto his truck. He drove and, I guided. We pulled the oil dipstick on the engine, and it was as as black as a freshly paved road. We of course pulled the transmission dipstick shortly after. Holding it up there were metal flakes that looked like fools gold. This car had been “rode hard and put up wet.” We offered to install a transmission for the customer for only the cost – our cost, no markup – on the transmission.

For this particular customer, we installed a 2.0L replacement engine. Her Camry originally had a 2.2L engine, but we’ve had excellent results with 2.0L replacement engines. There is virtually no power difference between the engines, and we get the 2.0L engines with normally between 30,000 and 50,000 miles. It really is a great solution for our customers. The install went great. The customer had to go out of town, and wanted the car delivered back to her in 8 days, so the mechamic was able to take his time and put some miles on the car after the engine install. In fact, he drove it back to her. There is no better way to test an install than to road test, and the road test verified that our customer had a great Toyota Camry used engine in her vehicle.

Used Chevy Engines

Due to the sheer volume of Chevrolets on the road, they have always been some of our best selling engines. Typically we see more demand for the smaller Chevy 1.6L, 2.2L and 2.4L engines that fit in vehicles like the Aveo, Malibu, Cobalt, Cavalier, and HHR, but we also see a significant demand for vehicles with the 3.6L and 3.8L engines Chevy offers.

When I say “significant demand,” people will often assume that I’m saying an engine is bad. Nothing could be further from the truth, since Chevy is making the best engines it ever has. When you have millions of a type of engine on the road, you’re just going to have demand, whether it be due to flukes, operator error, or good old fashioned wearing an engine out.

If you need a used chevy engine, there are a few things that you should know.

If you need a 2004 Chevy Aveo engine, get one from a 2005 or 2006. The failure rate on the 05 and 06 Aveos seems to be lower than the 2004.
A lot of people lie on the mileage on Chevy 2.2L and 2.4L engines. Demand is very high on these, so the wholesale pricing on them is high. Dishonest companies can make a killing misrepresenting 140,000 mile 2.2L and 2.4L engines. Don’t think that they don’t do that either, because they do! A person is wise to demand a CARFAX to verify mileage.
If you’re willing to swap fuel rails and manifolds, you can pull 2.2L engines out of much later year vehicles than a direct interchang offers. You can get a lower mile engine at a lower price.

Serving Customers Is Our First Goal

It’s great to work for a company that’s doing well, especially in this economy. The fact of the matter is that we are selling a lot of used engines to customers in just about every state in the Union and into Canada. We’ve been blessed because we work very hard to make sure we do a good job for our customers. We provide a free CARFAX to verify the mileage on every used engine that we sell, and we offer the best standard warranty on used engines in the industry.

With the economy struggling as it is, many customers are wising up to the fact that for the warranty they receive with their engine to actually mean anything, the company offering it has to both have integrity and be financially able to cover their warranty obligations. Many companies don’t have the integrity or the financial heft to honor their warranties. Dealing with these companies is a risk to you and your family, because no matter what precautions suppliers take to ensure that they are shipping good engines, engines do fail. We have one of the lowest failure rates in the industry, but we are not God! So what happens if you purchase an engine that fails from a company that doesn’t have the financial strength to stand behind their warranty? What happens is you get screwed.

Let me clarify that every company has warranty terms and that I’ve run into customers before who wanted me to cover items that we don’t cover under our warranty, items that we don’t even sell! In addition to provide a great service to our customers on the product side, we’re also taking steps to make sure that we have adequate staff to handle all of the phone calls we get. The great thing about our company is that when we need another person, we hire another person. Period.

One such company was sued by the Attorney General of Texas on hundreds of counts of fraud. They settled for $750,000.00, out of court. The original suit was for nearly $30,000,00.00. Doctors operate by an ancient code: “Do no harm.” Our code could be “Serve our customers well.” We take that seriously. We know that there are many companies that will only serve themselves, and that leaves one side lacking in the eqution.

Saturn Vue Used Engines

The Saturn Vue has been, for a number of years, Saturn’s top selling vehicle. Introduced in 2002 and continuing production to this day, the Vue has been offer with 4 engines: the 2.2L L61 (4 cylinder), the 3.0 L L81 (6 cylinder), the 3.5 L J35A3 (a Honda engine 6 cylinder), and 2.4 L BAS hybrid, which was a 4 cylinder engine.

Traditionally powered, all gas non-hyrbids have sold well for the Vue in every year. We’ve sold a number of 3.0L Vue engines (option L81) over the years nad had excellent luck with them. Incidentally, some mechanics have reported having luck interchanging Saturn Vue and Cadillac Catera engines. At this time, we’re uncertain as to whether this is a direct application, but we are investigating.

The 2.2L L61 is another common selling Saturn engine. with applications between 2000 and 2004 (and later years in other GM vehicles). On this particular engine we recommend you stick with a Saturn as there is quite a bit of work “swapping” to make the engine fit if you purchase from say a Cavalier or Ponatiac Sunfire. Yes, engines from those applications will work in a Saturn L Series, but again, doing all the swaps, while not incredibly time consuming, can be confusing for this particular application.

The J35A3 is probably the best engine that has been installed in the Vue. This is a Honda engine that has been used in multiple vehicles in various combinations. Block differences prevent it from being used from different applications, but you might find a list of vehicles the J35 has been used in interesting. The J35A1 has been used in the 1999, 2000, and 2001 Honda Odyssey; the J35A4 was used in the 2002, 2003, and 2004 Honda Odysseys, as well as the 2003 and 2004 Honda Pilots. Further, the 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 Honda Odysseys use the J35A6 (as well as the 2005 Honda Pilot). The J35A3 was used in the 2001 and 2002 Acura MDX. In other words, Honda uses this engine a lot. It’s a very reliable, mature design that isn’t prone to fail. We don’t see much demand for these engines in Saturn OR Honda applications.

The 2.4L BAS Hybrid engines are too new to have seen much demand. These engines are also called “Green Line” engines. They are considered environmentally friendly due to the fact that they cut off when the vehicle is not in motion. When the vehicle moves, there is a start assist belt from the transmission that quickly helps start the Vue. There is very little drive assist (though technically there is some).

BMW Engines

BMW’s are normally very reliable machines driven by maintenance conscious drivers. However, as with all mechanical devices designed by humans, engines in BMW’s can fail prematurely, or simply wear out over time. When this happens, the financial strain imposed on the BMW vehicle’s owner can be tremendous. Take the cost of a 2006 BMW 650 4.8L engine, for example: BMW will sell a remanufactured engine to a customer for $14,160. From where I’m sitting, that looks like a steep price!

That’s where we at low mileage engines come in. On late model BMW’s, we can typically save customers 50% or more and still give you a warranty that leaves you with peace of mind. Toyota Replacement Engines (Used Engines)

Over the past 25 years, Toyota has consistantly offered an excellence in quality that has pleased consumers and made a Toyota a worthwhile investment. Because of their excellent quality, Toyota’s hold their value well. Because they hold their value well, the vehicles are less likely to be “totaled” – literally declared a “total loss” - out in an accident (keep in mind that insurance companies use formulas which compare the value of the vehicle against the damage to the vehicle to determine whether to junk or repair a vehicle). Since they’re less likely to be totaled, the ratio of used parts available vs. the number of vehicles on the road is smaller. That’s the bad part about the excellent quality of a Toyota.

So where does this leave you, the used engine consumer? It means that you must be even more careful when shopping for used engines. When supply is limited, many used engine suppliers lie on miles. A 100,000 mile engine becomes a 50,000 mile engine, a 140,000 mile engine becomes a 70,000 mile engine, and on and on. That’s where CARFAX becomes important on USDM engines (a USDM engine is “United States Domestic Market – vehicles sold here in the United States originally). At Low Mileage Engines, every engine we sell from the US Domestic Market comes with a free CARFAX which we use to verify mileage. We know we have competitors who don’t provide CARFAXes. Why don’t they? That’s simple – would you provide evidence to a potential customer that you were misrepresenting a product? If you were selling an engine as having 70,000 miles, would you give your customer evidence that it in fact had 140,000? Of course not. You could sure sell that engine cheap though! Unfortunately, for you and your family, getting ripped off like that on mileage is not a good deal.

Northstar Engines in Buick Lucernes and Oldsmobile Auroras

When General Motors began selling the Buick Lucerne, it acted as a replacement for three vehicles: The Buick Park Avenue (Which had been sold for the previous 10 years with a 3.8L non-supercharged engine and a 3.8L supercharged engine), The Buick LeSabre, and the Oldsmobile Aurora. Of those three vehicles, only one had been equipped with a NorthStar engine: The Oldsmobile Aurora. The 4.0L engine used in the Aurora had several variations, but was used from 1996 to 2003. With a smaller displacement than the standard 4.6L Northstar Engines used in the Cadillac Devilles and Sevilles of the era, it quickly earned the nickname of “Short Star.”

When General Motors axed Oldsmobile, Cadillac regained a monopoly on the Northstar system. In 2006, Buick launched the Lucerne with two engines: a 3.8L (again, a continuation from the Park Avenue it replaced), and a 4.6L NorthStar engine. That’s right: Buick went full size. The 4.6L VIN “Y” engine in the 2006 Buick Lucerne is the same engine that is in the 2006 Cadillac DTS. In 2008, Buick took things a step further by adding the VIN “9″ engine to the lineup. The VIN 9 L37 engine had traditionally been placed in Cadillac vehicles with a goal of providing “hit it and get it” power. It is well known for being a responsive engine.

Mileage Verification is Important When Purchasing a Used Engine

As the economy worsens, many families are replacing engines instead of buying new vehicles (the smart route, in my opinion). Even with the savings of buying a used engine vs. a replacement car, the financial sting is still sharp to most. It is thus understandable that folks want the best price they can find. I caution you to make sure you’re truly getting the best price and not just an inferior product – don’t get ripped off. Many companies will quote you what seems like a great price, and instead of delivering a good engine that they’ll stand behind, send you junk.

For example, yesterday one of our salesman spoke with a client in California. The client was a young man looking for a replacement engine for a 1999 Pontiac Grand AM. He needed a 2.4L engine. We quoted him on a 47,000 mile motor with a two year warranty. He seemed pleased with out quote. Later that day, the client called to let us know that he thought he had found a better deal – a 41,000 mile motor for about$400 less! We told him what we always say in that situation – “If the mileage on that engine is correct, you need to buy it, because that is a great deal. But let me ask you this – if that engine had 141,000 miles on it, would it still be a good deal? Or would you feel like you had been robbed? Call your supplier, get the VIN off of that vehicle, and we’ll run a free CARFAX for you.” We of course knew that there was no way anyone could sell an engine with the low miles the customer was talking about for the price he had been quoted. And wouldn’t you know it – when we ran the CARFAX, the vehicle had 171,000 miles on it. He had been lied to not by 100,000 miles, but by 130,000 miles. He was furious! We haven’t sold him an engine yet, but we saved him a lot of heartache. And no, we normally don’t run CARFAXes on engines we’re not selling. We just don’t like losing businesses to cheats.
